Man charged after hate-motivated assault on Preston Street, police say

A 54-year-old Ottawa man faces multiple charges after a Preston Street assault on May 14, Ottawa police said.

At about 1:30 p.m., two young women were approached by a man who yelled sexually inappropriate, anti-Indigenous, violent slurs at them, police said in a news release. Both parents intervened to protect their daughters, police said, but were then assaulted by the man.

A man has been charged with inciting hatred in a public place; two counts of assault; four counts of harassment by threatening conduct; and causing a disturbance. He was scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
