At least 25 casualties, including two confirmed deaths, were reported in southwestern China on Tuesday following a knife attack at a public hospital, state media outlets said.
The incident occurred at Zhenxiong People’s Hospital in Zhaotong, a city in Yunnan Province, according to an online news portal run by public broadcaster Guizhou Radio and Television.
The state-owned outlet said a suspect was arrested in the aftermath of the incident. Its post on Chinese social media website Weibo showed a man in dark pants and a white top being carried away by uniformed police.
China’s official news agency Xinhua had earlier described the event as a “vicious attack,” which led to more than 10 casualties as of 1:20 p.m. local time.
Authorities in Zhaotong have acknowledged the incident, state media said, but were yet to release a formal statement at the time of writing.
No motive has been attributed to the alleged stabbing.
