Apple Every day: Hong Kong pro-democracy paper pressured to close down – BBC Newsnight

The tabloid’s workplaces have been raided final week over allegations that a number of reviews had breached a controversial nationwide safety legislation.

Police detained the chief editor and 5 different executives, and company-linked property have been frozen.

The publication had develop into a number one critic of the Hong Kong and Chinese language management.

The Apple Every day administration mentioned that “in view of employees members’ security”, it had determined “to stop operation instantly after midnight” – making Thursday’s publication the ultimate printed version.

The Hong Kong Free Press web site reviews that 1,000,000 copies of Apple Every day shall be printed on Thursday.

UK Overseas Secretary Dominic Raab mentioned the paper’s closure was a “chilling blow to freedom of expression in Hong Kong”.
