The Buddhist Congress of Canada is one of the co-ordinators of an online GoFundMe launched Friday to assist families of the victims of the mass killing of six people, including a mother and her four children, in Barrhaven late Wednesday.

“Our wish is to raise ($200,000),” organizers wrote on the post. The fund has raised about $20,000 as of Friday morning.

“Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.”

The victims of the slayings have been identified as Dharshini Ekanayake, 35, and her four children: Inuka (age seven), Ranaya (age four), Ashvini (age three) and Kelly (age two-and-a-half months).

Also killed was Gamini Amarakone, 40, a family friend who was living at the home.

The only survivor was Dhanushka Wickramasinghe (Maduranga), Darshini’s husband and father of the children. He was found critically wounded outside the family home. He is in stable condition  at the Ottawa Hospital.

The fundraiser notice says that once autopsies are completed and the victims’ bodies are released, “we will be undertaking the funerals and will update the information here.”

Donations can be made at the site (below) or to the Buddhist Congress of Canada (BCC) by way of cash, cheques made out to BCC or by “e-transferring money to the temple’s email with a small note that it’s for this worthy cause, so that we can manually add it here.”

A 19-year-old Sri Lankan national who was also living at the home has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
