Dog owners are split on whether or not they should leave their canines in the crate while they’re gone as some worry the dog will get into trouble.

But one owner, who left their dog out of the crate for the first time, learned that all they care about is rest and relaxation.

In a March 1 TikTok video posted to the account @camilaboyd, a pet camera captured the moment a golden retriever was left at home out of the crate for the first time. The 1-year-old pup cared about one thing and one thing only—sofa naps.

The dog decided to take advantage of the open couch and make it her napping domain. She contorted herself to try every inch of the couch, figuring out what spot was the comfiest. The dog didn’t care about damaging parts of the house. All she wanted was to be on the couch.

The caption reads: “…and yes, this is how she was for hours.”

When asked if she typically lounges on the couch like this, the owner told Newsweek that she will only do it if no one is watching. Sounds like a typical dog! And since she had the freedom to roam with no one home, there was no doubt she was getting on the couch.

The hilarious TikTok clip had brought in 1.8 million views, 226,900 likes and 604 comments as of Monday.

“She has been waiting for this day!” wrote a viewer. “Sweet, sweet couch freedom!”

One TikTok user added: “Love it. Making sure to test out all the pillows for maximum comfort!”

Other dog owners have made similar realizations after letting their dog out of the crate: “My two numnuts kept breaking each other out of their crates. Finally did free roam and this is all they did. Lesson learned.”

To Crate or Not to Crate

The decision of whether or not to crate a dog ultimately comes down to the specific owner as there are pros and cons to each option.

Plenty of puppy owners choose to use a dog crate to keep their canine out of trouble. But it doesn’t have to be just for young dogs. Older dogs who have separation anxiety or a tendency to get into items around the house can benefit from staying in a crate. You won’t have to worry about coming home to a chewed-up piece of furniture or shoes.

On the other hand, some owners do not crate their pups if they’re gone for an extended amount of time or simply because of personal preference. People believe long-term confinement in crates can lead to depression or aggression. If you decide not to crate your dog, be sure to put harmful items and food away and out of reach to keep them safe.
