A cat owner has left the internet in stitches after revealing how she discovered the reason behind her sleep deprivation.

In a post shared on TikTok earlier in March under the username paquito_thecat, the woman said she kept waking up multiple times every night until she decided to get to the bottom of the situation.

“I recorded my sleep to see why I wake up at night, and it all makes sense…” she says in the post.

The footage shows the owner sleeping in her bed when, at about 3:00 am, her cat shows up, demanding cuddles, an offer that she can’t refuse. He then goes in again at 3:05 am, 4:30 am, and so on all night at about half an hour intervals, until she finally wakes up at 8:00 am to give him even more cuddles.

The viral video comes with a caption that reads: “I’ll choose cuddling over sleep any day.”

It’s natural for cats to be up and active during the night or early hours of the morning because that’s when their ancestors would be hunting for prey. This is scientifically known as crepuscular behavior.

If you are out for work most days and don’t get the chance to spend much time with your cat during the day, they may try to seek your companionship at night, when they see you home, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.

While this is not unusual behavior for cats, you can train them to match your schedule more closely.

“Adjusting the timing of feeding or the type of food may help to alter the cat’s sleep schedule. For example, eating a few hours earlier or later, may help to alter the cat’s schedule just enough that it sleeps through the night,” the vet website states.

The video quickly went viral on social media, attracting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 11.2 million views and 1.3 million likes on the platform.

One user, Mind, commented: “I showed this to my cat and he says not gonna do that.” Serena said: “I wish my cat was like this, but instead she opens my wardrobe, throws out all my clothes, meows every 5 seconds, climbs in my curtains and bites or attacks my feet.”

Madinsurance said: “One of mine woke me up last night by putting the full weight of his paw on my throat trying to cuddle me.”
