A cat who lived in a shelter for over five years took a moment to herself on her first night at her new home, soaking up that she was safe and her hard days were over in a precious TikTok video.

The April 3 TikTok video, which was shared to the account @foreverhometrixie, was a throwback video from two years ago when the family first brought Trixie home. Originally taken to the animal shelter as a pregnant stray in June 2017, she had since lost two of her kittens, watched the other two get adopted, and waited five years for her turn to be taken in by a family.

Owner Lexi Hart told Newsweek via TikTok that the shelter had difficulty getting Trixie adopted because she was “too shy” and would hide from potential adopters. Hart and her husband laugh about that now since Trixie immediately approached them and rubbed against their legs when they went in to adopt.

It was love at first sight, and minus a few nervous hours in a new location, Trixie felt right at home. Her face in the video says it all: pure amazement and thankfulness to have a place to call her own as she makes happy biscuits.

As it is for any adopted animal, moving to a new home can be stressful. They could be anxious and scared as it is a whole new environment for them, which is why owners must allow them time to decompress.

While it can take some animals up to three months or longer to adjust, Trixie only needed a few hours.

“When we first got home, she ran into a closet and found a cardboard box,” Hart said. “She stayed in there for the first 10 hours. Then, it was like a switch flipped, and she came out and wanted attention almost immediately.”

Hart was expecting Trixie to take a few weeks to come out of her room and be comfortable with them, but she started pawing at the door, wanting to explore the very first night.

She became incredibly comfortable with her forever family, showing affection to Hart and her husband. The biscuit-making hasn’t stopped either since coming home over two years ago. It has become a daily occurrence.

And now, well, Trixie “runs the house,” as a typical cat does.

‘Made it’

Viewers quickly fell in love with the cat’s precious reaction. The TikTok clip had over 1.4 million views, 158,400 likes, and 1,904 comments as of Monday.

One viewer wrote what Trixie was thinking: “‘This… this is home?? I’m home??’ That sparkle in her eye.”

Another added: “She’s like, ‘I made it.'”

“Aww be happy now baby. You deserve all the love, security, and comfort your new home has to offer,” a third commented.
