All parents get emotional when first meeting their baby, and that includes dogs. A dachshund from Melbourne, Australia, has melted hearts on social media after his owner filmed his reaction to meeting “his baby.”

In the viral clip shared on Instagram in February under the username little.feet.dachshunds, the dog can be seen sniffing his little look-alike puppy as he wags his tail around. He then turns to his owner with a confused and shocked look on his face, as if asking if he really was responsible for the puppy.

The heartwarming video comes with a caption that says: “Dachshund dad meets his baby.” This is followed by: “He’s in shock.”

While female dogs are known for their maternal instincts, male dogs are usually not the same, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). Canine fathers tend to have virtually no paternal instincts.

Dogs’ ancestors, wolves, used to be very involved in raising their little ones, but domesticated dogs lost this trait over the centuries. Since they no longer need to provide for their offspring or keep them safe, they can be indifferent.

“Male dogs won’t display the nurturing behavior found in male wolves. However, like their ancestors, they are pack animals and, with time, will probably be perfectly amenable to their new pack,” the AKC says on its website.

The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 459,490 likes on the platform.

One user, miquelfeixas, commented: “Bill collector will charge him more next year.” Chichef69 said: “Smells nothing like me, not mine!”

Another user, leelee200867, added: “Stop looking so innocent…you know what you did.”

Salvatorestevie wrote: “Looks like he wants to go on the Maury show. Not mine!!!!” And Laurakatsnaps said: “He’s definitely not paying child support. You can see the denial in his eyes.”
