Defending World Series Champions Face Challenges with Key Players Sidelined

Max Scherzer is recovering from back surgery for a herniated disc and has been cleared for baseball activity. He is back with the team at their Spring Training complex in Surprise, Ariz.

Corey Seager underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia in January and began taking light swings on March 11. Manager Bruce Bochy said he would have a better idea of Seager’s timeline in about a week.

Josh Jung has resumed running after straining his left calf.

Nathaniel Lowe will be sidelined for a “little bit” with a right oblique strain. The timeline is estimated to be around three to four weeks.

Houston Astros

Justin Verlander will start the season on the injured list because of a right shoulder issue. However, he did throw a bullpen session against live hitters on March 14.

José Abreu took ground balls and also took batting practice on March 13 to work through some right knee soreness. Manager Joe Espada said if all goes well, the veteran first baseman will be back in the lineup as a designated hitter against the Cardinals on March 17.

J.P. France’s right shoulder inflammation has calmed down enough for him to start on March 16. His goal is three innings and about 50 pitches.

Seattle Mariners

Jackson Kowar was scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery on March 15 in Dallas with renowned orthopedist Dr. Keith Meister.

Matt Brash is still ramping up his workload while recovering from right elbow inflammation, putting his Opening Day availability out of the question.

Los Angeles Angels

Robert Stephenson continues to deal with right shoulder discomfort and may not be ready by Opening Day.
