A pet owner has shared footage of the moment their dog turns into “airport security” after they returned home from the store with groceries.

Ben the black Labrador was filmed taking a keen interest in the contents of several shopping bags in a video that was shared to TikTok by @bendoggo2022.

In the video, Ben can be seen closely inspecting the contents of the bags and sniffing in and around various items, most likely hoping to come across some kind of delicious doggy treat.

“You’ve just got back from shopping and your dog turns into airport security,” an on-screen caption reads. Though he ultimately comes away from his search empty-pawed, it’s not for lack of trying.

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell that helps them make sense of the world around them. In fact, one recent study published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE found that canines were even capable of smelling stress from human breath and sweat.

As part of the study, researchers collected samples from participants before and after they completed a difficult math problem.

Four dogs were taught how to search a scent line-up and identify the correct sample. The stress and relaxed samples were then introduced. In each session, each dog was given one person’s relaxed sample along with the stressed one. In every instance, the dogs were able to correctly alert researchers to each individual’s stress sample.

The findings highlight how dogs are able to pick up on human stress without the need for visual or audio clues. It also highlights our four-legged friends’ impressive sense of smell.

It’s a sense of smell that would have undoubtedly led Ben to any treats had there been some present. Then again, maybe the black lab began to sniff out that his owner was getting stressed at his insistence on searching through their shopping.

Whatever the case, his “airport security” style antics proved popular among dog lovers on the social media platform, many of whom took to the comments to have their say on the footage. For some fellow dog owners, Ben’s insistence on searching through the groceries was an all too familiar scenario.

“My husky girl SHOVES her head in each bag,” one TikTok user wrote, with another commenting: “My schnauz insists he takes samples back for analysis.”

A third user wrote: “My two rotties, don’t let me make it through the door. One steals a bag and drags it by handle, other one walks with his head in the bag” while a fourth said: “My bishon shoves her head down in the bags when I comes home from shopping.”

Other dog owners didn’t even make it that far.

“At least you made it to the kitchen. Security sniffers start as soon as I get in the door,” one lamented, with another commenting: “my jack russell cross literally gets into each bag!!! He knows there is always something for him wrapped in foil. We go out to lunch and I always bring it for him.”

This type of behavior wasn’t restricted to dogs either. “My cat literally climbs into each bag,” one pet owner revealed.
