A dog owner’s successful attempt to sneak a kiss to his golden retriever has left viewers in stitches.
In an Instagram video shared on April 3 the dog’s owner, under the username @marleyinnyc, holds up his shirt, smells it, and then turns to his dog Marley the golden retriever. He wanted Marley to confirm if it smelled, but there was nothing wrong with his shirt. It was a ploy to sneak a kiss on Marley—the oldest trick in the book.
The owner, Gary, continued to ask until the dog finally gave in. As Marley’s head lowered to sniff the shirt, Gary kissed Marley on top of his head. Marley immediately looked at Gary, staring into his soul with eyes full of betrayal.
The caption, written from the dog’s point of view, reads: “Gary iz overstepping the mark!”

Marley couldn’t believe Gary snuck a kiss in that manner. Plus, he’s probably upset he fell for the trick in the first place and that he looked like a fool.
While we know kissing is a way to show humans you care, dogs don’t understand kisses the same way. However, Mary R. Burch, a certified applied animal behaviorist, previously told Newsweek that dogs will tolerate kissing as it is often paired with petting and affectionate voice tones from owners. Dogs might go beyond tolerating it and enjoy the kissing experience.
But, some dogs and dog breeds might not like getting a smooch on their head. If a canine doesn’t show signs such as wagging tails, looking alert, licking your hand or face, racing around, or acting excited overall while getting a kiss, then owners should try other ways to show their affection.

The Instagram clip quickly went viral, reaching over 33.6 million views, 1.7 million likes, and 5,866 comments. Marley’s hilarious and priceless reaction made people’s day.
“Obsessed with the eyebrow drama, the blocky head, the eye roll…he is the absolute CUTEST,” commented one viewer.
Another added: “SOOO ADORABLE! He hates that he fell for it.” Marley can’t be too hard on himself. He’s not the only one who would have fallen for it too.
“Doggo was like, ‘Dude, are you serious right now?'” a third comment reads.
