Dog’s grooming so dramatic 6-year-old doesn’t recognize him: ‘Who is that?’

The moment a 6-year-old boy fails to recognize his dog after a haircut has left internet users in hysterics.

In a viral video shared to the TikTok account @aussiedoodlebirdie, Danielle Springer’s son Dawson can be seen opening the front door and greeting a dog with short hair and unusual markings. Unbeknownst to him, it is his pet Birdie, an Australian shepherd and poodle mix. However, Dawson, from Richmond, Texas, has no idea, and when asked “who is that?” by Springer, he responds by saying, “Charlotte.”

Springer, 40, told Newsweek that her son thought she had surprised him with a new dog, whom he named Charlotte on the spot. So far, the hilarious footage has racked up more than 1 million views in just five days.

Springer said: “It took me by surprise that he couldn’t spot Birdie, especially since her distinctive coat patterns hadn’t changed—only her usual fluffiness was missing.”

During the video, Dawson appears to be puzzled as he looks for Birdie. Springer said: “What astonished me more was his conclusion that Birdie had passed away.”

The mom added that their Yorkshire terrier passed away last year, and they received a memorial in a package—which is why Dawson thought the cardboard box in the hallway contained his dog.

“She didn’t die,” said Springer in the clip. “She got a haircut.”

The text at the start of the video points out that Birdie is brushed daily, but she became very matted. A dog groomer has previously revealed the most-difficult breeds to work with, and a poodle or doodle mix was ranked No. 1. This is because of their unique hair condition and curly coat.

The American Kennel Club says that poodles require regular grooming, but it doesn’t always have to be a trip to the groomer’s.

1. Brush regularly: Brush your dog several times a week to prevent matting, control shedding, and keep the coat shiny. Use a brush suitable for your dog’s coat type.
2. Bathing: Bathe your dog as needed, not too frequently, to avoid drying out their skin. Use a mild shampoo formulated for dogs, and ensure thorough rinsing.
3. Nail trimming: Keep your dog’s nails short to prevent discomfort or injury. Use a clipper with a safety guard to avoid cutting the quick.
4. Ear and eye cleaning: Clean your dog’s ears monthly and eyes as needed, using a damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners or instruments that could cause injury.
5. Dental care: Brush your dog’s teeth regularly with canine toothpaste to prevent dental issues and keep their breath fresh.
