Former President Donald Trump has asked the judge presiding over his mishandled classified documents case in Florida to delay court proceedings while he’s on trial in New York in a case involving hush money payments made to an adult film actress.

In Thursday’s filing, Trump’s lawyers asked U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, who is presiding over the documents case, to delay some pre-trial deadlines so they have “adequate time to prepare the defense.”

Trump’s attorneys added that the hush money trial is “proceeding expeditiously, and jury selection may be completed by the end of this week.”

The filing said that “President Trump respectfully requests” an extension of the May 9 deadlines that Cannon, who was appointed by the former president, put in place “until three weeks after the conclusion of” the hush money trial.”

Newsweek has reached out to Trump’s attorneys and a spokesman via email for comment.

On Monday, jury selection began in the New York hush money case against Trump, who is the presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee. Court ended Tuesday with seven jurors selected, though one was dismissed Thursday morning. Twelve more are expected to be picked, including six alternates.

Following an investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, Trump was indicted in March 2023 on 34 counts of falsifying business records relating to reimbursement payments made to ex-attorney Michael Cohen for $130,000 in hush money payments Cohen made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Daniels alleged that she had an affair with Trump in 2006, which he has denied.
