Three Democratic lawmakers have introduced a bill to rename the federal prison in Miami, Florida, after former President Donald Trump.
Representatives Gerry Connolly of Virginia, Jared Moskowitz of Florida and John Garamendi of California put forth the legislation on Friday. The bill states that “any reference” to the Miami Federal Correctional Institution would be changed to the “Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution.”
Trump, who is facing four criminal indictments and two civil suits amid his run for reelection, appeared in Miami federal prison in June 2023 to be arraigned for his federal classified documents case, where he is facing 37 counts related to allegations that he willfully withheld sensitive information at his Mar-a-Lago estate that was obtained during his presidency.
“Everyone knows President Trump loves to write his name in gold letters on all his buildings,” Moskowitz said in a statement. “But he’s never had his name on a federal building before and as a public servant I just want to help the former president. Help us make that dream a reality.”
This is a breaking story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
