A delivery driver in Edmonton, Canada, has shared a recent drop-off experience that sent a shiver down his spine, only to result in laughter moments later.

As he pulled up at a house to make a routine delivery, the DoorDash driver glanced at an upstairs window and saw what appeared to be a dark figure staring back. Initially startled, Roman, who didn’t want to reveal his full name, quickly realized that what he saw wasn’t a scene out of a horror movie, but more likely a mannequin, or a stored Halloween decoration.

In a picture he snapped, zooming in reveals a standing figure, two boney looking hands and what appears to be a plague doctor style mask on the head.

Sharing his experience on Reddit’s /doordash_drivers subreddit, Roman recounted his momentary scare, followed by a burst of laughter at the realization. “[I] saw it from my car. [I was] scared for a second, then realized and laughed,” he told Newsweek. “I didn’t tell the customer, I found it funny.”

The figure in the window of the home that the DoorDasher driver was delivering to. He got quite a shock.

Roman’s post garnered a mix of reactions from Reddit users, ranging from humorous anecdotes to tongue-in-cheek warnings. Some users drew parallels to biblical stories, while others shared their own experiences with eerie decorations.

MyJasonBennett humorously referenced the Biblical tale of Lot’s wife, suggesting sometimes it’s best not to dwell on such sights. “Remember the Biblical story of Lot’s wife? Sometimes you don’t have to look back! Just scram!!” they quipped in the comments.

While Reddit user lobsterdance82 suggested the figure may serve as a guardian of sorts. “The plague doctor watches over the homestead,” they commented.

A plague doctor was a physician who treated victims of bubonic plague during epidemics, primarily in the 16th and 17th centuries. Hired by cities, these doctors would wear long bird-like masks filled with aromatic herbs to protect them from illness. In recent years, the plague doctor has become a horror trope often used in films and stories to frighten viewers.

Another commenter weighed in with: “This looks like a midwest emo album cover,” while user BeedoeBe suggested the decoration might serve as a deterrent for intruders. “They probably have that on purpose to scare away intruders or something,” they said.

Another commenter quipped: “So there’s where Nosferatu has been!”

After taking his picture, Roman went about his day, but wanted to make sure more people saw the unusual sight: “[I] just want people to see it,” he said.

Another delivery driver left the internet cheering after she fulfilled a special request during a delivery—pretending to be the police to prank the customer’s kids.
