A social media video that captured an exhausted dog crashing on a footstool with his paw hanging off the edge has left the Internet in hysterics.

The viral video, which has been viewed more than 490,000 times since it was first shared to TikTok on 18 September, poked fun at how the dog had fallen asleep. It appears that the dog had been resting by his owners’ side as they watched television, before beginning to snooze in the unconventional location.

“My dog was so tired he fell asleep with his foot hanging off the footstool,” the video’s creator, who goes by @Cecero89 on TikTok, shared in the post.

The video had been captioned: “This dog can fall asleep anywhere, anytime.”

How Much Sleep Do Dogs Need?

According to the Sleep Foundation, which researches and publishes information relating to sleep and health, the average adult dog will need between 8 and 13 hours of sleep per day.

For puppies, research is more limited but the number is around 11 hours per day. An elderly dog is likely to need more sleep than a younger adult dog. It’s unclear how old the dog in the TikTok post is.

“Adult dogs sleep longer at night than puppies do, usually between 60 percent and 80 percent of the hours between 8 pm and 8 am, depending on their surroundings and their owner’s schedule,” the Sleep Foundation states on its website.

“However, daytime naps are still important for adult dogs, who may sleep for up to 37 percent of the day,” it said.

Sleep Foundation recommends that owners set up a sleep schedule for their dogs to help them sleep better overall throughout the night.

“Mammals have circadian rhythms that are influenced by light, so it’s easier for your dog to sleep at night if it’s dark or dim. It’s also easier for them to sleep if they aren’t being interrupted by excessive noise,” the website states.

Since it was shared on the social media platform on September 18 by @Cecero89, the TikTok post has been liked by over 55,000 users and commented on more than 40 times. Plenty of TikTok users have gushed over the sweet moment in the post’s comments section.

“How dare you only show the feet, we want to see the whole dog,” one user wrote.

“His feet also fell asleep,” another user added.

A third user shared: “Awww how adorable.”
