Nicholas DeFazio, public information officer for Ottawa Fire Services, said in a news release issued Monday afternoon that crews received multiple 911 calls reporting the fire in the 1000 block of Cyrville Road around 9:52 a.m. Firefighters were on the scene within four minutes.

By 10:10 a.m., crews were able to confirm there was nobody inside, and the fire was declared under control by 10:48 a.m.

The fire completely engulfed a section of the gas station used as a mechanical shop, which had two bay doors, but had not yet reached the fuel pumps when firefighters arrived. Firefighters began a “fast attack” to extinguish the flames and to prevent the fire from spreading to all the surrounding hazards, according to the release.

Those hazards included fuel pumps, multiple propane tanks, a propane refill station, tires and flammable fluids and oils inside the mechanic shop.

According to the release, the fire service’s hazardous materials team was dispatched to the scene to help contain the water runoff from the fire from entering sewers.

“Our HazMat Technicians deployed booms and absorbent material to contain the water which contained automotive products,” DeFazio said.

Firefighters had to remove parts of the walls and ceilings to extinguish the fire that had spread throughout the building. Two cars were on hoists in both bays of the shop.

“Firefighters had to be removed off the roof after a partial collapse,” the release indicated. “The hoists from the mechanical shop (were) the only reason why the roof did not fully collapse.”
