Davis announced after his junior season that he would forego his senior season and declare for the draft. He impressed at Illinois’ Pro Day and the NFL Combine, being predicted as a first or second-round pick. He was slated as the third-best CB prospect in the draft.

The Miami Dolphins would draft Davis with their first-round pick at #25 overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. Davis would secure 52 combined tackles, 11 passes defended, and 4 interceptions in his rookie season.

In his three seasons with the Dolphins, Davis had a total of 9 interceptions, 149 combined tackles, 32 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, and 5 tackles for loss.

Despite having a good 2011 season, Davis was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for a second-round pick and a conditional sixth-round pick. Davis would have a resurgence with the Colts, securing a Pro Bowl nod in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

After spending the 2012-2017 seasons with the Colts, Davis signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills. During the 2018 season, Davis pulled himself from the first half of a September matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, declaring that he was “done.” He shortly retired after the decision to pull himself.

Davis secured 22 interceptions in his 10-year career and was a well-respected cornerback in the NFL. He continued to impact the game even after his career had ended.

We join the entire NFL community in celebrating and mourning Vontae Davis. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. Rest in peace.
