Frost weather warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in 15 states across the country as temperatures dip to or near freezing point.
The agency said that the mercury will drop below 36 degrees Fahrenheit, causing frost formation in parts of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
The NWS forecast said that frost formation in these areas might harm sensitive outdoor vegetation there and recommended residents cover their sensitive and tender outdoor plants to avoid them being killed. The advisory is in place from the early hours of Tuesday, April 23, until 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. EDT, according to the area affected.

Temperatures will reach below freezing point in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, with the mercury dropping as low as 31 degrees Fahrenheit. In these areas, which will remain under warning until 8 a.m. EDT (for Virginia, New York and West Virginia) and 9 a.m. EDT (for New Jersey and Pennsylvania), the frost is expected to kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.
The following cities in Virginia and West Virginia are impacted: Staunton, Waynesboro, Stuarts Draft, Harrisonburg, Strasburg, Woodstock, Mount Jackson, New Market, Luray, Shenandoah, Stanley, Romney, and Moorefield.
In New Jersey, the frost will affect several areas in the center, north, northwest and south of the state; east central and southeast Pennsylvania will be impacted by frost and freeze conditions. In New York, Orange County will reach sub-freezing temperatures in the early hours of Tuesday.
Parts of northeast Kentucky, southwest Virginia, central, northern, southern and western West Virginia will see temperatures dropping as low as 33 degrees Fahrenheit, which will result in frost formation. In parts of east central, northeast, south central and southeast Kentucky, temperatures are forecast to bottom out in the 30 to 35 range on Tuesday morning.
Temperatures as low as 34 degrees Fahrenheit are expected by the NWS in parts of central, north central, northeast, northern and southern Maryland, the District of Columbia, central, northern and northwest Virginia and panhandle West Virginia, as well as in parts of southern Connecticut. These areas will remain under warning until 8 a.m. EDT on Tuesday.
Fannin, Union and Towns Counties in Georgia will also see temperatures dip as low as 34 degrees Fahrenheit. The mercury will hit 33 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of central, northern and southern Delaware, northeast Maryland, southern New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania.
Caswell County ​​in North Carolina and Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Halifax, Pittsylvania, and Rockbridge Counties in Virginia will see the mercury hit 35 degrees. Parts of southwest North Carolina, east Tennessee and southwest Virginia will see temperatures drop to 33 degrees Fahrenheit—same as in northwest, southwest and western Pennsylvania.
Temperatures between 28 and 35 degrees Fahrenheit will be reached in portions of northern Connecticut, eastern and southeastern Massachusetts, and northern and southern Rhode Island, where the NWS warns sensitive outdoor plants might be killed if left uncovered.
