National parks in the path of the solar eclipse are bracing for a surge in visitors on Monday and have closed off a number of areas to control crowds.

Monday’s total solar eclipse will plunge 13 states across the U.S. into darkness as the moon’s path crosses over the sun.

Thousands of visitors across the nation are expected to flock to viewing spots to watch the event as it moves across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

The next opportunity to experience a total solar eclipse over the United States will be in 2044 in North Dakota and Montana, and 2045 as it crosses from California to Florida.

The two national parks in the path of totality are Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas and Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. Many other national rivers, recreation areas and sites are also in its path.

In an advisory to visitors, the Hot Springs National Park warned: “In the days leading up to and during the eclipse, we expect the park (and the City of Hot Springs) to be extremely busy. If you do decide to view the eclipse from the park, be sure to plan ahead.”

It added: “We expect heavy traffic on roadways. Please check for local roadway closures and be patient and courteous while driving. Plan for local travel to take 2-3x as long as normal. Please check iDriveArkansas for the most up-to-date roadway information.

“Consider carpooling, and try to have plenty of gas or charge for your vehicle if you plan to drive. Parking in the park and around downtown Hot Springs is limited. Bring plenty of food and water.”

Meanwhile, Cuyahoga Valley National Park closed several parking lots the night before the eclipse, and some will remain closed throughout Monday.

Lisa Petit, the CVNP superintendent, also advised locals to stay at home. “If you live in the area, your home or neighborhood is where you’ll have the ‘best seat in the house’ for eclipse viewing,” she said. “We are doing our best to be prepared and we are looking forward to welcoming unusually high numbers of visitors.”
