Golden Retrievers React to New Fence Around Swimming Pool: ‘The Betrayal’

The moment when two dogs find out their swimming pool is no longer theirs to use has left internet users in stitches.

In a March viral TikTok video, the golden retrievers can be seen eagerly waiting to go outside, but then their plans for a dip are ruined as their owner has built a fence around the pool. The pair begin to bark in disbelief while their human can be heard laughing from behind the camera. In the comments, Emily (@dr.emzieees) said: “They’re so shocked [because] as far as they’re concerned, the backyard is for them and them alone.”

At the time of writing, the video has racked up more than 158,700 views and over 9,000 likes. An extract from the caption reads, “They are NOT pleased,” and the mom says the fence was added to protect her children as they are yet to have swimming lessons.

While golden retrievers are excellent swimmers, some people may be wondering if chlorine pools are safe for dogs?

The American Kennel Club (AKC) says that it is fine for dogs to swim in a pool. However, there are precautions that owners should take, such as:

• Rinsing off the dog after swimming to remove chlorine from their fur.
• Ensuring they don’t drink pool water.
• Being aware of signs of chlorine sensitivity or allergic reactions.

The AKC adds that dogs with floppy ears can suffer from an ear infection because of the dampness, not the chlorine which is why it’s important to use a towel to dry them after swimming.

Another concern is dogs consuming the chlorine tablets, so owners should put them in a safe and secure space that is out of reach for their pets.

So far, the video has almost 40 comments, and some users are trying to help them find a happy medium.

“The outrage! The betrayal!” read one comment, while another pointed out: “They are devastated.”

One person posted: “If you can put a doggy door on the pool fence so they can still get in and y’all can find a way to keep it closed for when the kiddos outside.”

Emily, a pediatric physician, wrote: “We worry that if we’re all outside we might forget or something and kiddo could slip through! We have another sliding door to this part of the yard though.”

Like children, dogs should never be left to swim unsupervised. “Even a regular swimmer can get into trouble if they encounter strong currents or can’t figure out how to exit a pool,” says the VCA, one of North America’s largest animal hospital chains.
