Hilarious Reason Dog Stops at Same Spot Every Day for 37 Weeks

Some dogs have a three-second memory, while others never forget, whether it’s the time you rudely went out without them, that one person they hate, or in the case of one Chihuahua, a spot on the ground where he found a slice of pizza 37 weeks ago.

In a video posted to the account @the_three_chimigos, a Chihuahua called Kevin can be seen refusing to move from a patch of grass while out for a walk.

“Kevin stopping at the same spot every day for the last 37 weeks cause one time he found a piece of pizza crust there,” reads the text.

Do Dogs Have Good Memories?

“Dogs and cats have different types of memories, just like we do,” said Dr. Brian Hare, professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, for PetMD. “They have spatial memory, remembering where things are located, short-term memories, and long-term memories.”

“Dogs forget an event within two minutes,” said the National Geographic magazine, citing a study from 2014 looking into short-term memory and published in the journal Behavioural Processes. It found that animals don’t remember specific events much at all; instead, they store away useful information that may help them to survive.

“Covering 25 species that ranged from dolphins to bees, the study found the average short-term memory span of animals was 27 seconds (which was the midway point before the memory is lost), according to a team led by Johan Lind, an ethologist at the Centre for the Study of Cultural Evolution at Stockholm University, Sweden,” added National Geographic.

“Chimpanzees, at around 20 seconds, are worse than rats at remembering things, while the memory spans of three other primates—baboons, pig-tailed macaques, and squirrel monkeys—exceeded only bees (the sole study participant that wasn’t either a mammal or a bird).”

Despite their memory shortcomings, dogs demonstrate strengths in other ways, including associative and episodic memory, says Hill’s Pet Nutrition.

“Associative memory is the brain’s way of creating a relationship between two things,” adds Hill’s Pet Nutrition. “It can be difficult to get a cat into their pet carrier, for example, because they associate the carrier with going to the veterinarian’s office. A dog sees their leash and knows it’s time for a walk,” or in fact an area of grass and thinks there’s pizza.

“Episodic memory is the remembrance of something that has happened to you personally and is linked to self-awareness,” Hill’s Pet Nutrition says.

Users on TikTok loved the video. “A squirrel fell out of a tree in front of our dog 9 years ago. He stares into that tree every day even now,” posted one user.

“It was the best day. And he still thinks it happened yesterday,” wrote another.
