Huge Dog Who ‘Doesn’t Know What to Do’ When Meeting 3lb Kitten Goes Viral

Sometimes the bigger the dog, the gentler the soul, as one English mastiff proved with its confused first encounter with a tiny three-pound kitten.

English Mastiff Otto, three, was introduced to kitten Fritz in an adorable video that has been viewed more than 1 million times since being uploaded to TikTok by account ottovonbarksmark on November 19. The 200-pound dog looks like a titan when compared to the feline and appeared puzzled by its admittance to the household.

In the clip, which can be seen here, Fritz was lying on a bed with a confused Otto sitting nearby, seemingly unsure of how he should react. “Doesn’t know what to do,” a caption on the video said.

While their owners had a good laugh among themselves, the kitten jumped down from the bed resulting in an inquisitive sniff from Otto.

Newsweek has contacted ottovonbarksmark for comment via TikTok.

According to the American Kennel Club, a male English mastiff stands at least 30 inches at the shoulder and can outweigh a fully grown man.

Eternally loyal, mastiffs are protective of family and have a natural wariness of strangers, which makes “early training and socialization essential,” the AKC added. “Mastiffs are magnificent pets, but acquiring a powerful giant-breed dog is a commitment not to be taken lightly.”

How to Introduce a Dog to a Kitten

While cats and dogs have a reputation for being household rivals, a well-prepared pet parent can improve the chances of their kitten and canine getting along if they follow certain steps.

U.K.-based animal welfare charity Blue Cross said it is vital that extra care be taken when introducing kittens.

“If you are introducing a kitten to a dog, a stair gate won’t be practical as they will easily be able to slip through the bars, so for safety reasons, the initial introduction is best carried out by placing the kitten in a dog crate. The dog crate should be large enough for a litter tray, a scratching post, a bed, and places to hide,” Blue Cross said on its website.

“Allow the kitten to get used to being in the crate prior to meeting the dog, by placing the crate in the area you have chosen away from the dog, so they get used to going in and out. Pop a blanket over one side which will help the kitten feel safe.”

The majority of people who commented on the post praised Otto’s calm behavior around his much smaller pet sibling.
