A volcano erupted in Iceland early on Sunday, the Icelandic Meteorological Office has reported.

The first estimate of the location is in the southeast of the country, the office said in an update at 8:15 a.m. UTC (3.15 a.m. ET).

It came after multiple earthquakes were recorded in the region, with officials warning that an eruption was imminent.

In the early hours of Sunday, the meteorological office said more than 200 earthquakes had been measureed in the area and that the seismic activity had moved towards the town of Grindavik.

Grindavik was evacuated in November after strong seismic activity damaged homes and raised fears of an imminent eruption. A volcano about four kilometers from the town erupted on December 18.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
