Donald Trump’s niece has criticized his daughter-in-law Lara, following her election as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) this week.

Mary Trump, a frequent critic of her uncle, branded Lara Trump as a “inept, unqualified, corrupt to the bone and self serving,” in her latest blog instalment released on Saturday, March 9. Newsweek has contacted Lara Trump via X, formerly Twitter, for comment.

Lara is married to the former president’s son Eric and was elected to lead the RNC alongside Michael Whatley, a North Carolina Republican, who will be national chair following the results revealed on Friday morning in Houston, Texas. Whatley, a long-time Trump supporter who has previously backed false claims that Trump rightfully won the 2020 presidential election, has previously served as the RNC’s general counsel.

Mary Trump wrote of her disappointment in Lara’s election while showering praise on President Joe Biden for his State of the Union address on Thursday evening in Washington D.C.

“As pathetic as this turn of events is on one level, it’s also a dangerous turn—the stuff of banana republics. But let’s dwell for a moment on just how deeply embarrassing this is—or should be—for the Republican Party, which richly deserves it,” Mary Trump wrote.

In the same meeting on Friday morning that Lara Trump was announced as co-chair, the RNC also voted to officially recognize her father-in-law as the party’s presidential candidate. Following the exit announcement from Nikki Haley this week, Donald Trump is now the only serious candidate left in the GOP race to secure the nomination.

Mary Trump’s disappointment at Lara Trump’s election has also been reflected in some Republicans, who took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their dismay. U.S. Army veteran Peter Henlein wrote: “Lara Trump is now Co-Chair of the RNC. After a lifetime of donating to every GOP nominee and multiple down ballot candidates every cycle….I’m out. I donated to help win elections, not to maintain the lifestyle of a billionaire. No point donating now.”

Speaking of the SOTU address, Mary Trump said that Biden “knocked it out of the park,” which she says was helped along by the “considerable help from the other side – whose tantrums and outbursts and lies he handled with the deftness of a practiced Kindergarten teacher.”

Mary Trump added: “They fumed, they pouted, they squirmed and, like Mike Johnson, they sat silently even when Biden was talking about removing lead from water in order to protect our children, lowering prescription drug costs, saving democracy from Russian aggression, and the record growth of small businesses—basically anything good about America or the positive progress this country has made since Biden had been in charge.”
