Getting your dog a new sibling is like getting them a friend for life. However, sometimes it takes time for them to get used to the incoming member of the family and accept them as a new bestie.

Accordingly, the owner of a long-haired dachshund called Winston has melted hearts on social media after sharing her pup’s reaction to learning that he will soon be getting a little sister to play with.

In the clip, shared on TikTok on Monday, under the username winston_da_ween, the poster can be heard telling Winston: “Hey, can I talk to you about something? It’s kind of important. So tomorrow, you’re getting a baby sister. Yeah, I know!”

As the pup looks at her confused, wondering why he needs a new sister, the poster continues: “Her name is Willow, but you don’t like that name… I mean we can change it? But right now her name is Willow. Are you going to be a good big brother?”

Winston didn’t seem to be too bothered by the announcement, until it was mentioned that the new sister may want to steal his favorite things.

The poster continued: “She told me she might steal your treats, but we can talk to her about it. And she might steal your toys. and she’s going to go to the beach with you, and she’s going to go on walks. Are you excited about your baby sister? You’re not going to be an only doggo, but you’re going to have fun! Yeah you’re going to have a lot of fun, but you’re not going to be the only one anymore.”

The heartwarming clip came with a caption that says: “Telling Winston that he’s getting a baby sister.” Followed by: “The gulp.”

Introducing a new puppy to your dog is an important step in their lives, and if done right can mark the start of a beautiful relationship between the two.

According to the American Kennel Club, it is crucial that they meet in a neutral place, so that your established dog will not see the puppy as an enemy invading their space. You can do this out in the yard, or maybe on a neighborhood walk.

It is also important that you do not reprimand your dog if the puppy introduction doesn’t go as smoothly as you hoped, as this will only make the situation worse. Instead, give them time to adapt, and encourage them using the positive reinforcement training method.

The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 528,500 views and 71,200 likes on the platform.

One user, Sam, wrote: “He’s like, ‘Willa you keep her away from me?” And Jess Camp said: “He’s like, but how will I be an only child with a younger sister?” Anna added: “He looks so betrayed like “am I not good enough?”
