Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert, a Republican hardliner, has been widely mocked by critics on social media after announcing that she will run for re-election in another, more conservative district in the state.

Boebert, who currently represents the Third Congressional District, announced on Wednesday that she will seek office in the Fourth, in an attempt to strengthen her chances of reelection after what’s been a bumpy year for the Colorado congresswoman.

Boebert will now be one of many GOP candidates trying to replace Republican Representative Ken Buck, who is not seeking reelection because of the widespread belief within his party that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump and the refusal from many Republicans to condemn the January 6 Capitol riots.

Her decision was widely criticized on social media, with people accusing her of being a “coward abandoning her constituents just to hold on to some power elsewhere” and describing her announcement as “smelling of desperation.”

“Lauren Boebert is literally running away from home after even Republican voters in Colorado’s red 3rd District are fed up with her crass attention seeking,” wrote one social media user on X, formerly known as Twitter. “She announced that she’s running in the 4th district on the opposite side of the state which is a full MAGA swamp.”

“If you didn’t know, Lauren Boebert is so scared that she will lose her seat because her Democratic opponent has been out raising her, that she is now running in Ken Buck’s seat!,” wrote Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat. “Yes, House Republicans know that the MAGA agenda is only catering to the minority of minority of the country and they can’t win over average Americans!”

In 2022, Boebert narrowly kept her seat in the Third District over Democratic rival Adam Frisch. Frisch, who’s running again for the 2024 elections, has already raised more than three times the funds that Boebert has in the past three months.

In a video posted on Facebook and X, Boebert described the shift to the new district as a “fresh start” after a “pretty difficult year for me and my family.” In September, the congresswoman was caught on camera groping and vaping with a date during a Beetlejuice performance at a theater in Denver. The two were removed from the musical performance after complaints from other members of the audience.

The incident happened as Boebert was finalizing her divorce from her longtime partner and father of her four sons, Jayson Boebert, due to “irreconcilable differences,” as the congresswoman put it.

In the same video, Boebert framed her decision as a good decision for “those who support our conservative movement,” saying that she will not allow Democrats to take the seat from the GOP after “destroying” her personally.

“I am going to do everything in my power to represent the 3rd District well for the remainder of this term as I work to earn the trust of grassroots conservative voters in the 4th District to represent them in 2025,” she said.

Newsweek contacted Boebert’s and Frisch’s offices for comment by email on Thursday.

Jeff Hurd, a Republican primary challenger for the Third Congressional District of Colorado who has received the backing of the state’s former Republican Governor Bill Owens and former Senator Hank Brown, said after Boebert’s announcement that he “will fight every day to ensure this seat stays in Republican hands.”
