Representative Lauren Boebert was the subject of another rebuke from one of her hometown newspapers on Sunday, with a new column chastising her for “cowardice.”

Boebert, a Colorado Republican and staunch loyalist of former President Donald Trump, has represented Colorado’s 3rd District since 2021. She is currently seeking reelection to the U.S. House in the 4th District, however, having come within only hundreds of votes of losing her seat to Democrat Adam Frisch in the 2022 midterm elections. The 4th District is seen by many as a more solidly red seat, with whoever secures the GOP nomination almost assured of a general election win.

The congresswoman’s move has not entirely alleviated her reelection concerns, however, with Republican voters frequently denouncing her and calling the district swap opportunistic. Many have also taken issue with her mounting personal scandals, most prominently the incident in which she was kicked out of a Denver theater for inappropriate behavior with a date, for which she has apologized. While polling is not abundant in Boebert’s race, several informal straw polls among GOP voters in the district have shown the congresswoman struggling against the rest of the field.

Boebert has also faced consistent rebukes from newspapers in her home state, with the latest arriving on Sunday morning in the form of a Colorado Sun column from writer Mario Nicolais. In it, Nicolais chastised her for her “cowardice” that he said was a major part of the eroding influence of the Republican Party in the Centennial State.

“Boebert has made a career embarrassing herself, her family, her constituents, and her state,” Nicolais wrote. “While last year’s theater dalliance served as just another reminder of her disdain for ordinary Coloradans, it was not the reason she flipped the finger to voters in the 3rd Congressional District. She knew she had outworn her welcome among voters who almost ousted her in 2022.”

He continued: “Boebert would not have survived a rematch against Adam Frisch. His fundraising dwarfed hers despite the incumbent advantage she should have held. His unexpected appeal to moderate voters and reasonable Republicans brought him within a few hundred votes of winning and could have only climbed in the interim. In 2024, an increase in turnout among Democrats — both because of the presidential election cycle and due to a sense that they could win this time around — would have swamped Boebert.”

Newsweek reached out to Boebert’s office via email for comment on Sunday morning.

The GOP primary race will take place in the 4th District on June 25. Despite her mounting woes, Boebert recently secured enough delegate support from the district in order to be placed at the top of her ballot.

Meanwhile, Trump, the presumed 2024 GOP presidential nominee, endorsed Boebert last month in a post on Truth Social, his social media platform, and also gave her a shout out during a campaign rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, in which he suggested that she would “do fantastically in [her] district.” While the effectiveness of the former president’s endorsements have been questionable in general races, they have been shown to move the needle considerably for candidates in GOP primary races.

“Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is a Proven Conservative and Effective Leader who delivers for Colorado, and our America First agenda,” the former president wrote in his Truth Social post. “Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is a trusted America First Fighter, and has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District!”
