Republican hardliner Lauren Boebert is trying to boost her bid for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District by having her youngest son acting in her latest campaign video and playing up her family side.

In the 30-second video, the congresswoman’s son Roman asks Boebert if she wants to go shoot some hoops with him, but she replies that she’s busy deciding what to say on her new campaign commercial.

“That’s easy, mom. Why don’t you just tell them about how you carry a gun and always fight for freedom?” Roman says. “Did you tell them about how you voted to cut spending and increase American energy production?” he continues, as Boebert says, “that’s pretty good.”

Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., arrives at the U.S. Capitol before the House passed a spending package, on March 22, 2024. Her youngest son praises her political achievements in a 30-second campaign ad.

The congresswoman’s son, who is believed to be 12 years old, then continues to list his mother’s political achievement. “You should probably also tell them that you pass bills to create Colorado jobs and to secure the border.”

The video then ends with Boebert saying that those were all great points and asking, “what’s next?” to which the child responds by lifting his basketball. The two can then be seen playing basketball in Windsor, Colorado, where the congresswoman lives.

Boebert shared the commercial on X, formerly known as Twitter, writing: “My youngest son Roman helped out with our latest campaign ad, reminding Coloradans of what I’ve gotten done for our state in Congress!”

Newsweek contacted Boebert’s press office for comment by email on Wednesday morning.

Reactions to the ad on the social media platform were mixed. While some appeared to find the video “wholesome” and praised Boebert for being “such a good mom,” many commented on the recent arrest of the congresswoman’s 19-year-old son.

According to police, Tyler Jay Boebert, the eldest of her four boys, was arrested in late February and charged with multiple felonies in relation to his alleged role in a string of car break-ins. Boebert then commented on the arrest by saying Tyler had made some “poor decisions” he should be accountable for, but it broke her heart “to see my child struggling.”

Other comments refer to an incident involving the congresswoman in September 2023, when she was escorted out of a performance of Beetlejuice in Denver after staff were alerted about her and her date allegedly vaping, singing, recording and “causing a disturbance” during the show. Boebert’s campaign manager reportedly denied Boebert was vaping.

Boebert, 37, had filed for divorce from Jayson Boebert by May, 2023, and it was finalized in October that year. She was granted a temporary restraining order against her ex-husband in early February, 2024.

In December, 2023, Boebert announced she won’t be running for re-election in her district but seeks to take Colorado’s 4th Congressional District’s seat in November. Her campaign is currently facing some troubles, as a recent survey by Gravis Marketing found that she would lose against Democrat Ike McCorkle in a hypothetical matchup between the two.

Earlier this month, McCorkle wrote on X that a poll conducted by its own team showed that he was seven points ahead of Boebert in the district.
