Lil Wayne’s NBA Finals Picks and Why Steph Curry Reminds Him of Tom Brady

Lil Wayne has long been an NBA fan and frequently references players in his music.

At a recent game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns, the rapper sat courtside with his son Kameron Carter. The duo wore a microphone for Bleacher Report, which captured a lot of entertaining banter between the father/son duo.

Wayne also made his Finals pick: Milwaukee Bucks vs. Golden State Warriors, which was a surprise to his son.

“I did not think you were about to say the Warriors,” Kameron said.

Wayne’s logic? At this stage of his career, Warriors star Stephen Curry bears some resemblance to legendary quarterback Tom Brady.

“To me, counting Steph out is like how it used to feel when you’d count Brady out,” Wayne told his son. “Them Patriots years that you just thought they’re not going to be there, and then they’d be in the f—ing Super Bowl. That’s how I be feeling about Steph. Every time I’m ready to say, ‘Yeah, Steph’s run is over,’ that boy be right there in the Finals.”

The entire evening looked like a fun experience for the Carters. They briefly discussed Kameron’s homework (history and Spanish the night before), and Wayne shook his head in disbelief. They discussed Austin Reaves’ progression, becoming one of the Lakers’ top scorers and his performance for Team USA over the summer. Wayne confided to Kameron (and the Bleacher Report microphones) that he believes the Lakers could make a play for Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid. LeBron James stopped by during warm-ups to shake Wayne’s hand, and he greeted Kameron with a “What up, youngin’?” Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell dropped in as well to greet them both and handed Kameron a basketball, which appeared to confuse him briefly.

“That’s you, he’s saying,” Wayne clarified. “That’s all yours.”

The game itself was an entertaining showdown between James and Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant, whose free-throw routine thoroughly entertained the Carters.

“That s— looks so dope,” Wayne laughed, imitating it from his seat.

And finally, the two applauded appreciatively when James finished off a big layup that pushed the Lakers’ lead to four with 41 seconds remaining. The Lakers went on to win 100-95.

“He had to let them know whose house he was at,” Wayne said. “KD is going crazy right now. He had to let KD now.”

“That was a huge bucket,” Kameron agreed.

The Lakers have started their season 1-2 after Sunday’s loss to the Kings. Wayne’s Finals’ picks are 1-1 (the Bucks) and 2-1 (the Warriors).
