Man Adopts Noisiest Kitten in Shelter, Then Finds Out Why She Was So Loud

An extremely vocal kitten that later became “very quiet” after she was brought home from the shelter has melted the hearts of cat lovers on Reddit.

Dante Castagnoli (u/350chevyman on Reddit and @squarebody454 on Instagram), a 31-year-old who works for a crane company in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, told Newsweek: “I don’t know her breed or exact age but she was less than six months old when I first got her. I suspect she’s mixed.”

On Reddit’s “blackcats” subforum, Castagnoli shared an image of the feline in a post titled: “Went to the local shelter and picked the noisiest kitty.”

A caption shared with the post says: “Frank has been quite the needy little girl. Or as I call her, moose. Or Moosey. Or moosey doosey.”

Castagnoli told Newsweek: “She was very noisy at the shelter. You could hear her meowing above all the other cats. However, when I gave her attention, she became very quiet and craved love.”

Our feline companions use vocalizations to communicate and “express their internal states,” states a January 2020 study published in the Journal of Veterinary Science.

They have a wide range of vocalizations (up to 21 different vocalizations have been described) and are “able to create an efficient communication with humans thanks to the flexibility of vocalization behavior,” the study found.

Cats may be able to make “solicitation purr” sounds to manipulate humans, according to Karen McComb.

McComb is the lead author of a July 2009 study published in Current Biology, which said: “Parallels have previously been drawn between the isolation cry of domestic cats and the human infant distress cry.”

According to the study, “such a cry, embedded within the naturally low-pitched purr, is dramatically emphasized by cats in the context of food solicitation and humans are highly sensitive to it.”

‘Loudest Kitty Must Have the Most Personality’

The cat owner in the latest Reddit post told Newsweek that at the shelter, Frank was let out of the cage for him and once she was released, “she became curious of the world around her, which I found endearing.”

Frank also let him hold her after being let out and started purring. “I also figured the loudest kitty must have the most personality and so far, I’ve been right,” Castagnoli noted.

“I ultimately wanted to take her home because her seemingly distressful meows were quelled by my love and attention. At home, she’s only noisy if she’s not in the same room as me,” he said.

Several Reddit users were endeared by the cat in the latest Reddit post.

User kt_asteroid wrote: “Awww what a beautiful babe! I have my own talkative black cat and I wouldn’t trade her for the world! They’re the best.”

User cubanosani59 said: “Looks like the cuddliest kitty.” The original poster replied: “Yeah she is very cuddly when she wants to be. She’s the first cat I’ve ever seen that rolls onto her belly when she sleeps next to me and also prefers to be cradled upside down when I hold her.”
