Man in Shock at What’s Written on Wife’s Birthday Cake After Epic Mistake

A thoughtful husband was left scratching his head after reading the message displayed on a cake he bought specially for his wife’s 30th birthday.

John Ellis was determined to do something memorable to mark his wife, Chanda’s, milestone birthday. It’s been a busy few years for the couple from Billerica, Massachusetts.

Back in 2020 they opened their first pizza shop, taking over an abandoned Pizza Hut. Despite the difficulties created by the pandemic, they found success with a range of gluten free calzones which they now sell for shipping under the brand name CanBe Gluten Free.

Though few adults truly celebrate their advancing years, a significant proportion still expect to be made a fuss of on their birthday. A 2021 survey of 2,000 Americans conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Evite found that 28 percent of respondents expect their partner to do something big for their birthday. In fact, men are estimated to spend an average of $164.32 on a significant other’s birthday festivities.

Ellis was ready to pull out all the stops though, starting with a specially made birthday cake. Unfortunately, for reasons entirely beyond his control, that birthday cake ended up being among the most memorable take away from his partner’s big day. “I ordered the cake verbally,” Ellis told Newsweek. “That’s what made it so crazy.”

When he first put in the order at the bakery, which he is refusing to name so they “avoid prank calls or random bad reviews,” he asked for an artfully decorated birthday cake with white icing and the word “thirty” written across it.

However, when he opened the box containing the cake ahead of Chanda’s birthday, he was confronted by a cake adorned with an entirely different word: “hinty.”

Ellis was initially baffled. “My first thought was that there was someone named Hinty with thirty written on their cake,” he said. “It clicked after about a minute or so.”

Checking the order form that came with the cake, he saw that someone had written the word “thirty” in beautifully joined up cursive. Unfortunately, that had led to a mix-up that left someone assuming the cake was for an individual by the name of Hinty. It should be stressed that Hinty is not a name.

Some might have been upset in this kind of situation but, as someone who works in the food industry, Ellis was a little more forgiving. “I didn’t call the bakery,” he said. “Accidents happen. Next time we go in we will show them for a laugh., I learned a valuable lesson: double check a cake before leaving the bakery.”

It helped that the cake was, as Ellis put it, “delicious” and that others saw the funny side in it all, including most importantly, Chanda herself. “There was a second of surprise and then she laughed about it. She loved the cake. It got laughs the entire party,” Ellis said. “At one point I remembered I still had the form they gave me still in the car and when I showed everyone why it said Hinty, they all completely lost it again.”

While Ellis is going to take extra care when buying cakes in the future, he’s already planning another one for Chanda’s next birthday. “It’s going to say ‘Hinty One,'” he joked.
