A dog owner has amused social media users after revealing the reason he spent $215 at a vet.

In a video, which has gone viral since the user @sulleybear2 posted it on TikTok on March 22, a French bulldog looks ill and struggles to walk. His worried owner then takes him to a veterinarian for examination.

In a series of captions, the owner explained the reason behind his pup’s odd behavior: “POV: Your dog is acting weird and keeps falling over … So you take him to the emergency vet, only to find out … That cigarette butt he tried to eat on your walk was actually weed and your dog is just high.”

Newsweek contacted @sulleybear2 for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Animal Poison Control Center found that in 2019, calls for incidents of pets eating marijuana had increased 765 percent over a 10-year period.

In an article published on Better Vet, an online veterinary clinic and pet care platform, the veterinarian Joshua Montgomery wrote that while it is rarely fatal, the accidental ingestion of marijuana is more harmful to dogs than it is to humans.

The most common symptoms that a dog is suffering from cannabis toxicity, he wrote, include excessive drooling, dilated pupils, lethargy, sensitivity to loud noises, excitation or agitation, incoordination or loss of balance, vomiting, urinary incontinence, low body temperature, low blood pressure, and shaking or seizures.

At the time of writing, the TikTok video of the intoxicated Frenchie had received over 4.3 million views, 432,200 likes and 1,500 comments on the platform.

A user wrote, “Omg the fear on dudes face in the first clip is so real, when you don’t know whats happening its sooo scary.”

“My chinchilla had to go to the vet. Tried to do er vet but no exotic was in. Took him to find out he was acting a way because he didn’t like the hay I gave him,” another added.

“The light shaking back and forth! My dachshund started doing that and I was freaking out and his was the same thing except I didn’t see him eat anything,” one commenter said.
