An AccuWeather forecast map shows the possible tracks of a winter storm that could affect millions in the Northeast over the weekend.

The storm is expected to hit the mid-Atlantic and New England regions on Saturday night and remain through Sunday.

“During the day on Sunday, the final act of the storm has the potential to bring accumulating snow to much of the mid-Atlantic and New England,” AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said on the weather forecasting company’s website.

A map shows two possible storm tracks, one staying south of the Northeast and another curving north.

“There is a chance that accumulating snow can fall all the way to the Atlantic coast from this storm in the Northeast, depending on if cold air holds its ground to the north and the storm takes a track slightly more to the Southeast rather than right along the coast,” Buckingham said.

Newsweek reached out to AccuWeather via email for further comment.

If the storm continues to travel through the Northeast, road conditions in New England and upstate New York will likely worsen on Sunday. But if the storm turns off the mid-Atlantic coast and out to sea, the northern parts of New York and New England will see little to no snow.

The storm could be the end of a snowstorm drought in Philadelphia and New York City for the past two winters. The last time Philadelphia saw an inch of snow from a single storm was in January 2022, and the last time for New York City was that same month.

The current storm, which will originate in the Pacific, will bring snow west of the Rockies to the mountains along the Pacific coast from Tuesday to Wednesday. Then, from Thursday night to Friday, the storm will dump heavy snow over the southern High Plains in parts of New Mexico, northwestern Texas, western Oklahoma, eastern Colorado and western Kansas.

As the storm moves over the lower to middle portions of the Mississippi Valley from Friday night to Saturday, AccuWeather said, the amount of land in the “snow zone” could diminish.

“The storm is expected to blossom across the Southern states to start the weekend, likely bringing along a swath of heavy rain and thunderstorms,” Buckingham said. “At the same time, farther to the north over the Ohio Valley, the storm can expand northward into cold enough air for snow to fall.”

The storm will cause major travel disruptions on the roads and at airports, according to AccuWeather. It suggested that people in the Northeast travel on Friday night and Saturday instead of Sunday.
