Matt Rhule’s Description of Bill Belichick Makes Owners Look Bad

The NFL coaching cycle has come and gone with one of the stranger occurrences being that former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was not selected by any team. Belichick interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons twice, but the team went with Raheem Morris instead.

Belichick is a strong defensive mind and one of the greatest coaches the NFL has ever seen. His 20-year dynasty run with the Patriots might not ever be replicated. However, all his success did not even warrant him getting a coordinator position.

Belichick may not even have wanted to settle for a coordinator position, but he could have still been hired in some sort of consultant role. Former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel has a consultant role with the Browns, which is something Belichick likely could have found.

Belichick has been involved in football, as he recently appeared at the University of Washington to engage in seminars with the team and his son, Steve. Despite not getting a formal job, current Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule also hosted Belichick, and his words about the former head coach make NFL owners look really bad.

Rhule immediately dives into what it was like to pick Belichick’s brain. “He is so smart, he has seen so much, that he can make the complex so simple that it humbles you and embarrasses you. I was embarrassed yesterday….he went and a half hours just with the coaching staff.”

Rhule explained that Belichick’s knowledge of the game of football was so extensive that it all but put his own knowledge to shame. Rhule has been coaching since 1998, and 26 years of experience goes a long way. For Rhule to say that he was in awe and was embarrassed about his own knowledge is saying something.

One would think that many colleges reached out to Belichick, like Washington and even Nebraska, but again—Belichick might want to stay at the professional level. There is always the narrative that Belichick’s way of thinking is too “old school” and that may be true to a degree. Still, he has coached the Patriots to six Super Bowl wins.

Despite Tom Brady being the greatest quarterback to play the game, it was Belichick who helped to mold him. The team was also put together by Belichick throughout the years, and his way of drafting players was successful until his last few seasons.

Just listening to Rhule explain how different Belichick is in terms of knowing football should make plenty of NFL owners rethink not giving the former head coach a deeper look. Again, they may have already offered him another role besides head coach, but this is just speculation. Belichick has been coaching for nearly 50 years, and to not have him on any sideline in 2024 is just going to seem odd.
