There are some things that are just better left to the professionals, and anything to do with cutting hair comes high on that list—including thinning.

If you have super thick hair, you can relate to the hot sweaty feeling some of us feel through summer, and the frustrations of hair looking puffy, which is why many choose to use thinning shears or other methods to help remove some of the weight.

At least, that was the idea for beauty content creator Kaitlin Brandon, who was left with a nasty surprise after using thinning shears at home.

Brandon, 24, from North Carolina, decided to take matters into her own hands after she was left unhappy with a professional hair cut.

Content creator Kaitlin Brandon used thinning shears to take some of the weight out of her hair. Unfortunately, the results weren’t quite what she had in mind.

Speaking to Newsweek, she explained: “I had chopped my hair off a few days before this and I didn’t like how blunt and thick it looked short.”

To rectify her hairstyle, Brandon used thinning shears in an attempt to lift some of the weight out, but, a slip of the scissors left her with a tuft sticking out on the top of her head.

Brandon, who was filming her haircut, shared the video to TikTok where it quickly gained a lot of attention, with 2.3 million people having watched the clip since it was shared on March 1.

It was timing that led to the issue, as, despite Brandon being experienced with this type of cutting scissors, she admitted she was rushing, telling Newsweek: “I’ve been using them since high school and never had any issues with them.

“I think I was rushing too much and not taking my time. I also wasn’t really paying attention to where I was doing it, I just wanted it done.”

While for some, a bad haircut would become a cause of stress and anxiety, Brandon has been surprisingly calm about the ordeal.

“It didn’t bother me at all,” she said. “I’m someone who truly believes it’s just hair and it will grow back. I shaved my eyebrows completely off for a whole year so if I can rock no eyebrows, I think I can rock a botched hair cut for a while.”

While the mom was relatively relaxed, Brandon’s child couldn’t contain their laughter, telling their mom: “you look like the baby.”

When asked if she’d be picking the tool back up anytime soon, she said: “If I said no, that would probably end up being a lie. I say no now, but I’ll probably end up doing it again here in a couple of years.”

What Do the Comments Say?

The comments sections was full of people with no sympathy for Brandon, as one said, “girl you are the definition of CHAOS.”

Another added, “You’re supposed to section it and not thin the top of your hair/crown area!”

Others offered more practical advice, as one recommended: “A teeny dab of a pomade (enough to make your fingertips slightly tacky) will smooth that down. Maybe a lil hairspray. Good to go.”
