A family who thought they had two female guinea pigs recently got an unexpected surprise when a baby appeared in the cage.

Mady, who lives in Texas, gained more than 4 million views on a TikTok video of the moment she made the discovery. As she approached the cage and a small guinea pig jumped out of a gap, she can be heard exclaiming: “Hold on. That’s another guinea pig. Who had a baby?”

Mady had initially rescued a guinea pig named Jessie from a neglectful situation on Christmas Eve. Little did she know, Jessie wasn’t the girl they expected. The rescue organization had mistaken Jessie for a female, and Mady had no reason to doubt them.

“I never thought to double check his gender,” Mady told Newsweek. “Some males have very obvious external parts and Jessie doesn’t. I did not know he was a boy until I went to clean out the cage and found their baby.”

Female guinea pigs can reach sexual maturity as early as one month old, but should not be bred until at least 3-7 months of age.

Guinea pigs can breed and give birth quickly, with a gestation period of just 2 months, and the ability to come back into heat and get pregnant just 15 hours after giving birth.

The newfound baby, affectionately dubbed “Jessie junior,” now lives in a cage with his father. But Mady’s surprises didn’t end there. She soon realized that the mother guinea pig might be pregnant again, as she hadn’t been aware of her initial pregnancy.

“We are watching her to see if she has more babies,” Mady said. “If she does, we are hoping for at least one female so she can have a friend. If she has all boys or isn’t pregnant, we will be buying her a friend from the pet store—and triple checking their gender!”

Mady is ensuring responsible pet ownership, too, and has since taken steps to ensure the wellbeing of all of the furry family members. The parents have been separated since she identified the mother, and plans are underway to provide larger accommodations for their growing brood.

On TikTok, thousands of people shared their reactions in the comments. “Surprise, surprise,” said one viewer.

While another said: “Omg this happened to my mom and I back in the early 90s we ended up with like 20 guinea pigs for like 10 years straight after it happened a second time.”
