There’s nobody in the world that dogs love more than their owners, until they have a child. Then we all know who the dog’s favorite is going to be for the rest of its days.

In a post shared Saturday on TikTok under the username alishaarodrigues, a pregnant woman in Portugal can be seen lying on the couch with her small dog and letting her feel the baby’s movement for the first time.

As the dog lays her head on her belly, the mom explains to her that there’s a tiny baby growing inside. When the dog finally feels the baby’s kicks for the first time, she looks at her owner as she almost cries tears of happiness.

Imagining what the dog was thinking, the owner can be heard saying in the video: “What’s that, Mum?”

The post comes with a caption that says: “This is the moment she finally realised there’s a baby in my belly. The baby moved a little here. I’m 20 weeks and 2 days. She wasn’t sure but it was the most wholesome thing ever.”

This is followed by: “Highly recommend trying to get your pet’s first reaction to your baby movements/kicks. She loves to cuddle my stomach and I’m so glad I caught this on camera and have it forever.”

Dogs are very sensitive to human changes, and, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), they may be able to tell when their owners are pregnant.

The AKC’s website explains that because of their extraordinary smell receptors, dogs can pick up on different scents resulting from chemical changes, including cancer, drugs, a person’s menstrual cycle and even pregnancy.

“While we can’t know for sure the exact moment a dog senses a pregnancy, we do know that not much gets by the canine nose. Although your pup can detect a change in scent, it’s unlikely he comprehends the reason for the change,” the AKC added.

The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 270,100 views and over 1,000 likes on the platform.

One user, ananana, commented: “She knew before that cause they can hear heart beat. She just looked at you to see did you also feel a movement.”

And user Here said: “I’ve been trying to get my doggy to do this I’m 31 weeks, he won’t.”

Bre wrote: “My dog could care less, he literally steps on my stomach and makes my son move trynna get him off him lol. My daughter on the other hand loves trynna feel her brother move, she will randomly sit there with her hand on my stomach.”

Newsweek reached out to alishaarodrigues for comment via TikTok comments and could not verify the details of the case.
