Ukrainian soldiers believe they spotted a disk-shaped UFO using a reconnaissance drone deployed in battle, a video circulating on social media shows.

The video was shared by X (formerly Twitter) user “@albafella,” who frequently posts updates on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“Ukrainian defenders filmed an unidentified disc-shaped object in the combat zone,” the user, who describes themselves as a military and political blogger, said on Wednesday.

Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have played a crucial role throughout the war. Mykhailo Fedorov, who is Ukraine’s vice prime minister for innovation in education, science and technology, and the digital transformation minister, has helmed Ukraine’s drone program since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Ukraine’s government launched its “Army of Drones” initiative and fundraising campaign to purchase drones for Ukraine’s defense forces.

The Daily Mail, which said it originally exclusively obtained the footage, said it was captured in February by Ukraine’s 406th Battalion using one of the over 300 “heat vision” quadcopter drones used by Kyiv’s military. It was flying more than 500 feet above sea level when soldiers spotted the mysterious object, which the publication estimated to be some 30 miles away.

Newsweek could not independently verify the authenticity of the video and has contacted the Ukrainian Defense Ministry via email.

“Why can’t he fire missiles at us?” one member of the battalion asked, to which another soldier responded: “What do you mean?”

“Holy ****. What the **** is this? Why isn’t it moving?” one serviceman asked, after the object appeared to remain still despite the drone zooming in.

“I’m telling you, it’s a UFO, for sure. It is staying in place, on the screen,” one member of the battalion said.

“Zoom in more. It’s standing still, do you see?” another said. “Can’t see anything on the thermal cameras?”

“Maybe ram it?” one member suggested.

There have been numerous mysterious sightings throughout the war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022.

In January 2023, Vasily Golubev, the governor of Russia’s southern Rostov region, said on Telegram that a “small-size object in the shape of a ball” had been discovered flying “in the wind” at an altitude of around one and a half miles. “The decision was taken to liquidate it,” he said.

“I urge everyone to remain calm. To ensure security, all forces and means are involved. The sky is covered with anti-aircraft defenses,” he added, without elaborating on what the object was.

At the time, local news outlet Pivyet Rostov reported that “a UFO in the form of a ball was shot down in the sky.”

In April 2023, an unidentified flying object was spotted flying near a nuclear power plant near Russia’s St. Petersburg, triggering a “special response status,” a military officer told Russian online newspaper, Lenta.ru.
