NATO aircraft were scrambled after Russia launched large-scale missile strikes on Ukraine overnight on Thursday.

The Polish Armed Forces wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Please note that Polish and allied aircraft operate in the airspace, which may result in increased noise levels, especially in the southeastern part of the country.

“Tonight, intense long-range aviation activity of the Russian Federation is being observed, related to missile strikes against objects located on the territory of Ukraine.

“All necessary procedures to ensure the safety of Polish airspace have been launched, and DO RSZ is monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis.”

It comes after German fighter aircraft were scrambled to intercept a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on Tuesday.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

F-16 fighter jets take part in the NATO Air Shielding exercise near the air base in Lask, central Poland on October 12, 2022. Poland said aircraft has been activated after Russian strikes on Ukraine.
