The National Football League goes through meetings every offseason with the NFLPA and competition committee to vote on crucial rules and changes to the NFL before the new season begins. So far, the meeting has led to the controversial banning of the “hip-drop” tackle.

The tackle was viewed as dangerous and has since been banned from the 2024 season for defensive players to utilize. Despite the NFLPA and current players upset about the decision, it has been made to enhance the game of football.

However, there is now an even more radical change that has been made to the trade deadline. NFL owners have now voted to change the trade deadline, pushing it back one week. Adam Schefter announced the decision on X.

The new NFL trade deadline has been pushed back by one week, allowing teams to acquire players to the Tuesday that occurs after Week 9. This is a historic change that will forever alter how teams can help for a playoff push.

Injuries are a part of the NFL, which is one of the toughest aspects of the game. However, with this new change, teams can prepare better for the latter half of the season by picking up players to help bolster rosters.

Injuries aren’t the only thing that leads to teams acquiring players via trades, but it is one of the biggest proponents of leading to trades. Still, in-season trades happen all the time and now teams will have far more time to take a look at what is not working.

The 2024 season might also be one of the biggest seasons in terms of rookie QBs getting their start. Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and J.J. McCarthy might all be day-one starters. Should they not pan out the way teams hope, in-season trades could happen for veteran backup QBs.

This is just speculation, of course, but this historic change to the trade deadline is set to alter the NFL for the foreseeable future. Not many rules that have been changed have been popular amongst fanbases and players, but this rule change might be welcomed by all.

Players also wanting to get out of horrible situations can also be given an extra week to decide if they would rather request a trade to find a better partner for their future career. This is a huge change for the NFL, but one that has been a long time coming. The 2024 season should be a wild one.
