Owner Thinking She Got a Mini Dachshund Not Prepared for What Dog Becomes

One dog mom was thrown quite the curveball when her “miniature” dog did not stop growing.

TikTok user @_richmond_sausage_ bought what she believed to be a miniature dachshund. These dogs are essentially the same as the dachshund breed, just a smaller version.

Mini dachshunds typically only weigh up to 11 pounds and grow to 5 or 6 inches tall, according to The Spruce Pets. In comparison, dachshunds can weigh from 16 to 32 pounds, standing tall at 8 or 9 inches.

The owner made a video to show the size of her “miniature dachshund” at first, then compared him to how big he is at the moment, and, well, there is nothing small about him now.

Screenshots from a TikTok video show the lengthening dachshund. The owner originally thought she purchased a mini, but was very surprised when he kept growing.

The video starts with the owner revealing her dog Richmond in the mirror, holding him up with just one arm and the camera in the other hand. She again revealed him in the mirror, but this time she had to use both arms to hold up the dog and her phone and asked, “Whose horse is that?”

The difference between the two clips is night and day. Richmond essentially doubled, possibly even tripled in size.

But it sounds like this owner isn’t the only one who did not realize their minis weren’t so mini as they kept putting on the pounds. Plenty of people “fell” for the advertised miniature dachshunds.

Monday’s TikTok video brought in 261,500 views and over 11,300 likes, with viewers commenting about their similar experience.

“My ‘mini’ turned out to be NOT so mini at 36 pounds!!!” wrote one TikTok user.

Another person added: “My mini is 17 pounds. My second one is 9. We either got twice the dog on one or half the dog on the other.”

A third said: “Same! We were sold a kennel club registered mini dachshund … someone’s lying somewhere because he’s no mini.”

Luckily, she doesn’t seem to mind the larger size. Her caption reads: “Wouldn’t change my Cumberland sausage for the world.”

She even wrote in the comment section: “I think Richmond is a tweenie because he is too big to be a miniature but I don’t think he’s big enough to be a standard either.”

Newsweek reached out to the dog’s owner via email for comment Friday.
