Online viewers have cheered a group of people in New York who lifted a car out of the way so a city bus could turn around.

In a video shared on Reddit’s r/MadeMeSmile subreddit that has received more than 45,000 upvotes, the people are seen working together to lift a car that was purportedly parked illegally.

In the clip, posted by Reddit user u/TheChefBoyRC, the people see that the bus is unable to make a full turn because of the car’s position and take matters into their own hands.

A series of cheers echo through the street as the group moves the car and the bus is freed.

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has the largest public bus fleet in the U.S., with over 5,700 buses of various types and models. Besides its 8.4 million population, New York forecasts it will have over 60 million tourists this year, making access to good public transportation essential in the city.

Recently, the MTA reported 4 million daily subway riders for the fifth time in less than a month, with weekend ridership reaching 80 percent of its pre-pandemic baseline.

Of the millions of workers in the city, only 27 percent commute to work by car, truck or van, while the majority use public transportation. Perhaps the group of people in the video were quick to move the car because the bus needed to resume service.

Since the video was shared Wednesday, viewers have praised the passersby for taking the initiative to move the car.

User Primary-Reality1137 commented, “One thing about New Yorkers, if one person starts helping, everyone wants to join in and get it done.”

That sentiment reflects the city’s reputation for coming together in times of need. Reddit user 123Virginia even hailed the group as “heroes.”

Resilience and determination are often associated with the city’s inhabitants, as well as a strong sense of community. Saaraah0101 chimed in with a succinct yet powerful statement: “Don’t mess with New Yorkers, man.”

The video also drew humorous comments, with dabbers26 humorously suggesting, “Should have flipped it over while they were at it.”

“New Yorkers are a different breed,” wrote Fantastic-Singer-915.

Professional_East281 playfully suggested, “Spiderman would be proud,” referencing the superhero’s connection to New York City.

In a way, the event resembles a real-life superhero act, showing that ordinary people can come together to make a difference in their community.
