A video of a blind cat searching for her owner has quickly gone viral on TikTok.

The clip was shared by user @thenamesamber on January 5 and has since received over 6.1 million views, 1.7 million likes, and more than 5,700 comments.

The camera is pointing down to the ground, revealing the owner’s blind cat named Stevie, whose head is facing up. However, because the feline cannot see, she lets out the softest meow. Then, Stevie stretches her paws in the air, trying to find her owner. The caption reads: “This happens multiple times a day and it never gets old.”

Finally, after a few searches, the cat’s paw lands on the owner. She beams with excitement, immediately going in for a nuzzle.

Some cats start to lose their vision over time. The common reasons for their blindness include glaucoma, cataracts, degeneration of the retina, tumors within the eye or eyes, or damage caused by feline herpesvirus. If this happens to your cat, you might notice they become disoriented, which is why it is crucial to help keep your home accessible for your pet.

Cat’s Protection, the U.K.’s largest feline welfare charity, has given the following tips to help look after blind cats.

  • Keep your blind cat indoors with interesting toys and puzzle feeders to keep the boredom minimum
  • If necessary, have a safely fenced-in yard for them to use. Make sure to keep them microchipped in case they escape.
  • Encourage them to walk around by themselves. The scent glands on their paws will leave a trail for them to follow.
  • Talk to your cat as you approach them to avoid startling them.
  • Avoid moving furniture, toys, and litter boxes. Place a barrier in front of the stairs until your cat knows where the stairs are located and learns to use them again.

“I didn’t know I needed this. You just melted my heart sweet baby,” commented one viewer of the viral video.

Another added: “I will never understand how people think cats aren’t affectionate.”

Someone asked whether or not Stevie does well when the owner is away. The owner responded by saying the cat is comfortable even then as she knows her environment. However, it takes Stevie time to adapt when she is in a new place.

“She plays with toys, chases her brother, and jumps on and off things really well. She does still occasionally fall off of/run into things but overall her navigation is impressive,” the owner said in the comments section.
