The U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has announced a recall after “foreign material” was allegedly found in protein bars.

Doctors Scientific Organica and the FDA have issued a voluntary recall for a limited quantity of Burn Boot Camp Afterburn Grass-Fed Whey Protein Bars (60 grams) in the Triple Chocolate Almond flavor due to a “potential presence” of “foreign material.” The Florida based company announced on Wednesday that the product may contain parts of items such as disposable hairnets, shrink wrap and parchment paper.

The FDA has warned that “foodborne foreign objects that are flexible and not sharp may cause minor injuries such as transient choking or gastrointestinal system injury.”

Three batches of the protein bar are affected by the recall, all of which have been sold at retail locations run by Burn Boot Camp, a gym franchise, throughout the U.S., and through the company’s website.

The bars are sold in bright blue packaging with white text that reads: “Burn boot camp afterburn: Grass fed whey and protein bar.” In brown lettering underneath, the packaging reads: “Triple chocolate with almond butter.”

The company said it was “taking this action out of an abundance of caution” after consumers contacted them to report the issue with bars they had purchased. Doctors Scientific Organica also clarified that no injuries or illnesses associated with consuming the product have been reported so far.

The 60-gram protein bars being recalled have the following lot codes: 181, 184, 187. The lot number is printed on the back of wrapping for each bar, as well as on the bottom of each cardboard case. Exact locations of where the bars with the affected lot codes have been sold throughout the country have not been made available.

The warning issued by the FDA and Doctors Scientific Organica instructs those who may have purchased the bars to “not consume the product and should return the product to the location where it was purchased or destroy it themselves.”

“We are working with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on this voluntary recall and will cooperate with them fully,” the company said in a statement. “The quality, safety and integrity of our products remain our number one priority.”

The company, which says on its website that it is has “state of the art quality assurance,” continued: “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action represents to our consumers and retail customers.”
