Ask any dog owner, and they’ll tell you that nothing beats seeing their pup’s excited reaction when they return home. But greyhound owner Lorna Giffin-Hannan doesn’t even have to wait until she gets home to see that wagging tail because her pup runs down the street to meet her instead.

As she made her way home in Edinburgh, Scotland, Giffin-Hannan spotted her partner Jamie walking their rescue greyhound, Jerry, who immediately beelined for his favorite human. The former race dog is accustomed to showing off his pace, but nowadays he usually prefers a slower pace of life; that is, until he spots his mom walking back from work.

Seeing Jerry on his evening walk always brightens Giffin-Hannan’s journey home, as she told Newsweek that he races to her with “such joy and excitement.” After adopting him in November 2023, she has loved seeing him grow in confidence and start to display his quirky temperament.

Giffin-Hannan said: “It’s always a huge surprise when I bump into Jerry during his walk, and whenever he sees me, he will nearly pull my partner over to get to me. He’s really come out of his shell over the last few weeks and his funny little personality is starting to shine.

“He’s a gentle boy, and he’s been getting used to his new life with us. Recently, it’s like he’s realized that he’s found his forever home, and he shows us much more affection.”

There is no doubt that the greyhound is the fastest dog breed, regardless of how rapid your dog can be when they get a case of the zoomies. Indeed, the current Guinness World Record was recorded back in 1994 when a greyhound named Star Title clocked 41 miles per hour in Australia.

As you sit there and watch your Labrador take a nap after strolling up to their food bowl, you’re probably wondering how it’s even possible for greyhounds to move so fast. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says their long, sleek, and muscular build enables them to take huge strides while barely touching the ground.

The pads on their paws also act as shock absorbers, and their narrow head is aerodynamic, helping them spend an incredible 75 percent of time in the air when running, per the AKC.

With that in mind, Giffin-Hannan will certainly have to be alert next time she sees Jerry flying towards her at speed. After the rescue pup spotted her during a walk in February, his owner couldn’t resist capturing it on video and sharing it on TikTok (@jerry_thegreyhound). Alongside the video, Giffin-Hannan said that Jerry had “not seen her for ages” and didn’t want to waste another second without her.

The clip has delighted many, with more than 5,300 views and over 460 likes on TikTok. Giffin-Hannan hopes that sharing more videos of Jerry’s new life will encourage others to adopt a greyhound, as she told Newsweek that they are the sweetest dogs.

She said: “He’s had a lot of love on TikTok, and it’s been amazing to share him with the world. There are so many greyhounds that need homes, and we wanted to show everyone how amazing they are. They’re full of happiness, kindness and silliness, and we are so lucky to have him.”

Among the comments on the post, one person wrote: “Nothing beats a greyhound running up to you.”

Another comment reads: “His happy gallops.”

A third TikTok user posted: “Gorgeous dog. Well done for rescuing him.”
