Russian authorities shut down main human rights group – BBC Information
Russia’s Supreme Court docket has ordered the closure of Memorial, the nation’s most outstanding human rights group, which chronicled Stalin-era purges and was an emblem of democratic change after the autumn of the Soviet Union.

The ban follows a wider crackdown on opposition politics and unbiased media.

Prosecutors had accused Memorial of failing to point in its publications that the group obtained funds from abroad.
