Premade potato salad packages were recalled on Wednesday after a labeling mistake led to an undeclared egg allergen.

Home Style Foods recalled 43 cases of Kowalski Simply Sides—Jack’s Potato Salad with a sell by date of April 29, 2024, which were distributed to 25 stores in Michigan, including 21 Kroger locations, Diamond Dot Market, Holiday Market Royal Oak, Larry’s Foodland, and Tenuta’s Market.

The company said the product was recalled because of “an incorrect label resulting in an undeclared egg allergen” in an announcement shared on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website.

“The back label containing the nutrition facts and ingredients is incorrectly labeled as ‘Very Berry Strawberry,’ in a 16-ounce round plastic deli cup,” the announcement said.

There have been no reported illnesses related to the recall as of Wednesday, however, the company warned, “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

The mislabeled packaging was discovered by Quality Assurance during a routine documentation review, according to the announcement.

Newsweek has reached out to Home Style Foods via phone for comment.

Symptoms of Allergic Reactions

Eggs are one of the nine major food allergens, along with fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, sesame, and milk.

“The law requires that food labels identify the food source of all major food allergens used to make the food,” the FDA states on its website.

The FDA states that it “enforces regulations requiring companies to list ingredients on packaged foods and beverages[…]When problems are found, the FDA works with firms to recall products and provide public notification to immediately alert consumers.”

The administration warns of the possible symptoms of allergic reactions.

“Food allergic reactions vary in severity from mild symptoms involving hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening symptoms, often called anaphylaxis, that may involve fatal respiratory problems and shock,” the FDA said.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include:

  • Hives
  • Flushed skin or rash
  • Tingling or itchy sensation in the mouth
  • Face, tongue, or lip swelling
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Dizziness and/or lightheadedness
  • Swelling of the throat and vocal cords
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of consciousness

The FDA advises people with a known food allergy who begin to experience symptoms to stop eating the food immediately and get medical attention. An emergency medication like epinephrine may also be needed.
