‘Security Dog’ on Alert All Morning, Then Owners Realize What He Could See

Dogs will often self-appoint as guardians of the house, protecting the family from all the “dangers” that are sitting right outside—birds, squirrels, mail carriers and, believe it or not, hats.

One Dalmatian thought it was necessary to protect his house from a woolly hat someone had accidentally left on the brick wall in his backyard. Even if the hat tried to do something, there was no way this guard dog would let it get close to the house.

In a February 17 video posted to the Instagram account @ourlittlechurchcottage, Harry the Dalmatian was staring and growling out the window all morning. His front paws were resting on the window sill, his head inched forward, and his eyes were locked on the danger outside.

The caption reads: “My boy Harry taking his security job very seriously and keeping us safe from danger at all times.”

It took the owner some time to realize what Harry was growling at. The owner wrote in the comment section that they originally thought he was growling at a squirrel, but considering he was at the window for three hours, they needed to investigate.

Harry must’ve been peeled to the pink coloring of the hat, too. Not too many pink animals to spot going in and out of the backyard, so this probably threw him for a loop.

One can’t blame this Dalmatian for protecting the house since this dog breed has a history of protecting people. Dalmatians were used as carriage dogs to guard horses and coaches from any dangers on the road. However, Dalmatians are not giant nor overly muscular. They instead use their keen eyes to alert owners to the first sign of danger.

The Instagram reel reached more than 98,300 views, 2,048 likes and 212 comments as of Tuesday. People were cracking up over the dog’s dedication to protecting the house over something so “scary.”

“This is hilarious. Better to be safe than sorry,” said one viewer.

Another pointed out: “Well, it could have been a vicious crocodile or something. He’s got to investigate.”

A third added: “Well, thank heavens that Harry is in total watchdog mode. Who knows what that woolly hat is up to!!”
