A Siberian husky mix whose brother died shortly after being surrendered to a Texas shelter two years ago recently enjoyed a field trip as he continues to look for a loving forever home.

Prince, 3, arrived at the Converse Animal Shelter (CASI), just northeast of San Antonio, two years ago and has been looking for an active family to take him into their lives.

Despite still waiting to find his forever home, Prince looked upbeat and happy during a field trip in October where he met a number of people. “He was surrendered to us when their human mom was moving and they couldn’t go with [her],” the CASI spokesperson told Newsweek.

“His older brother died shortly after being dropped off. He’s friendly and very loving. Would do good with an active family to go on walks and hikes,” the CASI spokesperson added.

Prince is sweet and also gets along with adults, children, and other dogs, the spokesperson said. They recommended that the pup has a meet-and-greet with any potential housemates before being adopted. Prince is also microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and is heartworm-negative. He is also part of the shelter’s foster-to-adopt program, meaning that he can be taken home for a trial run before being adopted.

While CASI is a private no-kill and nonprofit animal shelter that relies on donations and adoptions to fund itself, many other animal rescues in the country do euthanize pets that come into their care.

Pets in U.S. Shelters

Each year, 6.3 million pets are surrendered to U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet ‘Shelter Watch Report’ found.

Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.

While many people might know exactly the questions to ask when adopting a dog, the American Kennel Club recommends that everyone ready to bring a companion animal into their home asks the following questions:

  • Where did the dog come from?
  • How many homes has the dog already lived in?
  • What is the dog’s health status?
  • What breed or mix of breeds is the dog?
  • What is the dog’s personality?
  • Is the dog potty-trained?
  • Does the dog get along well with children or strangers?
  • Does this dog get along well with other dogs or other pets?
  • Does the dog have basic good manners?
  • Does the dog have any behavior problems?
  • Will the shelter or rescue take the dog back if the rescue does not work out?
